We’ve been building retaining walls in Edmonton for over 24 years.

Retaining Walls - Edmonton - Brickworks LandscapingJim has built many different types of retaining walls over the years, he’s built walls starting with small precast, to very large precast walls, like Rosetta Outcropping, to our beautiful natural stone walls. There are many different reasons to install a retaining wall in your yard, the first and most useful, is to eliminate an undesired hill and create a level yard. Having a level yard provides you different options, for example, we often lay a patio in front of the wall, which is very practical, and also looks fantastic. Another reason for installing a retaining wall is to create feature-raised flower beds, which look great and can really make yards look complete.

Stone Retaining Walls

edmonton retaining walls - raised flower bed

Our main types of walls start with precasts which are made out of blocks such as allen block, pisa, split and stack, cornerstone, and belvedere. These precast walls are more suitable for raised flower beds and smaller retaining walls. These walls are all made with geogrids, drain rock, and weeping tiles. There is also a larger precast wall known as Rosetta Outcropping, which uses huge slabs ranging from 2 to 6 feet in length, and from 6 inches to 2 feet in height. These blocks come in different colours, such as black, rustic, and tan.

Another type of retaining wall, and our most popular style, are the natural stone walls which are made out of rock called rundle, which comes in black or brown and looks fantastic when the colours are mixed. We also make retaining walls made out of kendall and bronze, which is a lighter brown to bronze colour. We’ve also used other types of rock, like sandstone and rocky mountain rustic. These walls are the most unique walls we make, our customers often describe the wall like a jigsaw puzzle, and Jim has had many compliments on how creative and unique his walls are.

Natural Stone Walls As Flower Beds

Natural stone walls are often used as raised flower beds because of the sheer beauty of the wall. Natural stone walls can also be used to build small to medium-sized walls, built up to four-feet high when using the larger rocks. The rock comes is 1-3 inch and 3-5 inch, and is called ‘wall rock’. We have also used ‘feature boulders’ and built them into the walls.

Wooden Retaining Walls

Another type of wall we like to build uses wooden treated 4 x 6’s. Wooden walls are good for flower beds and small retaining walls. When we build retaining walls out of wood we use tie backs which are made to help the walls from pushing and leaning. The good thing about wooden walls is that it’s a cheaper alternative to rock and precast walls, with the downside being that in Edmonton, retaining walls made out of wood might rot out and have to be replaced.

Jim will come out and help you decide on which type and style would look the best in each type of yard, and also help you pick out colours. He can also take you to his Edmonton supplier and show you in person all the types and colours of each product. Products that we frequently use are Expocrete, Barkman, and Techo Bloc.

Edmonton Retaining Wall FAQ

What are the benefits of installing retaining walls?

The main reason people install retaining walls in their yard is to increase usable area. Taking out slopes that would otherwise be unusable and turning them into beautiful sitting areas is very common. Another reason why people install retaining walls occurs when a neighborhood is built on a slope and there’s an elevation change between properties.

What is the typical cost of a retaining wall in Edmonton?

A typical cost of a retaining wall really depends on what type of material you use to build it, a wooden wall would be the cheapest way to go, generally starting at $30 to $50 per sq/ft. For block walls or natural stone walls, they go for around $80 to $120 per sq/ft. The cost of retaining walls also depends on the size of the wall, and if you need it engineered.

Can retaining walls be built in yards with existing landscaping?

Over the years we have done many retaining walls in existing yards where the customer did the landscaping years before but didn’t realize how unusable a sloped yard would be. We come in with a small skid steer that can fit through gates and between houses, and fix the slope to make it usable for the customer.
