Brickworks landscaping uses many different types of product, but the one which seems to get used the most is natural stone. There are many different types of natural stone colours and shapes to choose from. We use natural stone the most because it can be used in so many ways including retaining walls, patios, sidewalks, stepping stones, feature boulders & ground cover. We’ve been using natural rock since we started landscaping in 1994, and we are well known for our ability to build stone walls, stone patios, and stone sidewalks like nobody else can.

Natural Stone Patios & Sidewalks

When we are building patios and sidewalks we use a style of rock called slate. It’s a very flat rock which makes for great building material and we use a variety of thicknesses from 1 to 5 inches. For patios, we generally use 2″ slate. There are many types of natural rock to choose from. We find we commonly use Rundle Rock (it’s our best seller) and you can choose from a black or brown colour and Rundle Rock also looks great if you mix the two colours together. We use another type rock called Kendal which has a mix between tan, red and gray colours, which makes for a great mixture, another type of natural stone we use is called Bronze, which has a very similar colour to Kendal.

Building a Natural Rock Patio or Sidewalk

When building a rock patio or sidewalk we would use the same steps for preparing the base as we would when we are building a base for paving stone, the only difference is after the rock is laid out we sweep in rundle fines to set the stones and stops them from moving. We also build sidewalks into the grass where we cut out the grass and place the stones on but leave the grass to grow around the stone. When we are building rock retaining walls we use the same base as we would when building other walls, we use larger size rock on the bottom and then a mix of large medium and small rock throughout the rest of the wall with a top large rock usually around 1 to 2‘ thickness called caps.stone patio installation edmonton - brickworks landscaping- natural rock sidewalk

Why Choose Natural Stone for your Patio or Sidewalk?

There are many reasons why people choose to go with natural rock, the biggest reason is that it is natural, and the look of it when built correctly is unmatched by any other type of man-made product. Another great thing about this natural stone is that it has a very staggered look to it, and the only defined line is the top cap which easily allows us to build these walls in sloped yards. Rundle stairs are also available and are often built into the retaining walls.

Edmonton Natural Stone Patio FAQ

Are rock patios and sidewalks durable and easy to repair?
Rock patios are very durable and can last a very long time even in the harsh weather we have in Edmonton. If there are repairs needed, or broken stones replaced, stone patios are very easy for us to repair.

How much would a rock patio cost in Edmonton?
The price for a rock patio, compared to other types of patios, is generally very similar, depending on the type of rock. The cost of a natural stone patio can go up a bit if you want the rocks saw cut, so the gaps between them are very small.

What are the different types of rocks and colours available for patios in Edmonton?
There are many different types of slate-style rock used in Alberta but the most popular types are Rundle, Kendall, and Sandstone. The colours would vary from blacks, browns, tans, and rusty colours.

What type of base is needed for a rock patio?
We use the same base for the rock patios as we do for the paving stone, which is about six inches of road crush, then we use Rundle fines for levelling before laying the stone.

What do you use as the infill between the rocks?
There are a few different infills that we use, there’s a polymeric sand designed for rock patios, or we often use Rundle fines or limestone fines which pack nice and keep the rocks from moving.
